PCB Assembly — Mounting Technology

One board, three mounting technologies

On the very same PCB, how a component is mounted depends on its shape and how it is supplied. SMD bonds to the surface, Through-hole inserts and clinches through the board, and odd-form insertion places parts no standard machine can handle, fed by dedicated feeders. Here are the technical conditions of all three.

Surface Mount

SMD Surface Mount

  • Supply — reel tape, tray, stick
  • Process — print, SPI, mount, reflow, AOI
  • Parts — 0402 chips to QFP and BGA
  • Joint — reflow at 235–250°C, bonded in one pass
  • Precision — ±25–50 μm at volume speed
  • Inspect — SPI, AOI, X-ray
  • Traits — high density, double-sided, high-frequency friendly
Through-hole

Through-hole Insertion

  • Supply — axial/radial reels, auto inserters
  • Process — forming, insertion, clinching, soldering
  • Joint — wave/selective solder, 75%+ barrel fill
  • Strength — best against vibration, shock and thermal cycling
  • Use — power stages, high current, heat-dissipating parts
  • Inspect — missing, polarity, lift; ICT
  • Traits — easy to repair, lower density
Odd-form Insertion

Odd-form

  • Parts — capacitors, transformers, relays, FETs
  • Supply — 16 dedicated feeders by part type
  • Align — laser-measured correction, ±0.05 mm
  • Mount — insert, press-fit, clinch + force monitoring
  • Verify — ZHMD, OCR, traceability
  • Value — automating the last insertion process
